Creative Writing - Sylvia Kemp Each year we seem to be joined by one or two new members who each bring their own special contribution. The last academic year was no exception and saw the group grow once more in both numbers and talent. We currently have several members attempting novels, some even on their second, while others continue to delight with their short stories, autobiographies or tales of holidays and events. One new member, Beverly Dewhirst, won the ‘Christmas Carol’ short story competition and another member, Joan Soper, came second in the ‘Spring’ poetry competition. So much talent that I sometimes wonder what I am doing there, but then I know. I go to enjoy good company, friendship and lots of laughs. Not to mention the tea and biscuits.
9.30 to 11.00am, Wednesdays.
Begin Writing-Helen Davies Last year saw us with a small, but dynamic group, full of enthusiasm. Two of our members won U3A competitions, one for a story and one for a poem. We have a full range of activities, from poetry to free writing. One suggested title for a story can call up an amazing breadth of imagination. You have a story in you, haven’t you? Bring it to our group and allow us to enjoy it too!
11.15 to 12.45, Thursdays, starting in October.
Film on Friday - John Winter Films are selected from the top 10 lists of the web based DVD renter “LoveFilm” and selected according to member requests. The usual charge of £1.00 applies
Group meets every other Friday at 3:15pm in St. John.
Play Reading – Marie Straker Purely for pleasure and the fun it is to be part of a group reading a play aloud together! Plays will range from old to new, high comedy to darkest tragedy. Members of the group will volunteer(!) to read parts aloud in an appropriate accent or manner - or in a normal voice - just as the mood takes them! It’s also O.K. to come just to listen and enjoy.
1.30 to 4.30pm Tuesdays, fortnightly; from 14 September, 2nd and 4th Tuesdays, Autumn and Winter Terms.
Theatre Group - Celia Dobson and Jenny Bushby Theatre trips run throughout the year, mostly to matinee performances, covering a range of productions such as dramas, musicals and ballets. Information on new bookings are included in the weekly news bulletin, available at all U3A group meetings. Booking forms are sent via email and are also available from St. Johns HQ.
